Homalomena Rubescens are a rare indoor plant specie, that have an elegant and delicate look and are best suited for a living room set-up. The stem of the foliage has a mix of burgundy, red and copper hues, attached to the heart-shaped leaves, that are slightly curled at the edges. The leaves are patterned and grow as large as two times the hand palm size. The leaves have a distinctively pretty embossed look, that makes it an eye-catcher. Each stem grows upright with a single leaf, that lay flat at the top end. Besides the looks, the plant is tolerant to low light conditions and has a hassle free maintenance requirement. Hence, it is definitely a must have addition to an indoor collection. It will go well in a big pot corner set-up in the living room, since it can stand low light conditions. However, choose a place next to a window or a room with bright light conditions for best results.

Description

Name  Homalomena Rubescens
Common names  Homalomena Rubescens, Red Stem Homalomena
Hindi names  होमलोमेना ग्रीन/ होमलोमेना
Type  Tall stemmed
Growth pattern  Perennial
Exposure to sun Place the plant in partial to full shade. Avoid direct exposure to sun. A prolonged period of direct sun exposure will scorch and fade the colour of the leaves.
Light  The plant required partial to full share. While it can also tolerate low light conditions, place it in well lit rooms with indirect bright light exposures. While the plant does tolerate low light conditions, its growth might slow considerably. Therefore dappled light exposure is the best. Find a place near the window or in a bright light room.
Soil Use loamy and a well-drained soil mix. Maintain soil moisture. Do not let the soil to completely dry out. Homalomena plants require moist but not soggy soil.
Watering Allow the top inch of the soil to dry before watering. Too frequent watering will lead to root rot and too little of water will lead to discoloration of the leaves. Therefore maintain a regular watering schedule for the Homalomena plants. They are not drought tolerant and will start to droop if left un-watered for a prolonged period. Fertilize the plant once a month with slow release water-soluble fertilizers and vermiculite.
Pruning  Pinch off the dried or fallen leaves whenever required.
Maintenance level  Low
Air Purifying qualities  No

PLANT TYPE

Sapling

A sapling is a young plant and will come in a smaller size. Why take a sapling? While it is wonderful to watch your little sapling grow, multiply and produce plantlets, take different color variations and forms till it fully matures, some of the saplings require extra care before it hardens and is full grown. While some others are absolutely hands free. If you are ready to give it all the care and love to admire the comparative growth patterns across plants, we suggest you go for a sapling.

Aged

An aged plant will come in a slightly bigger size than a sapling. While we say 'aged', it only means that once a sapling, is now a grown up and would require comparatively less attention than a sapling. If you have the anxiety about going wrong in the process or just cant wait to see a full grown foliage, we recomend you go for an aged plant. Ah ah !! dont get us wrong, age has no bar for plant, they are evergreen, have infinite growth potential and are renewable.
